Murud Janjira Fort. A fort on the sea


The Janjira fort is spread over 22 acres and has 22 Buruz (Buruz is marathi word which means outpost).

Watch Tower - Janjira Fort


The watch towers were designed in such a way that soldiers could get wide view of the sea from inside, however from outside the fort these appeared as a small windows.   


Shahi Talab. A sweet water lake inside the fort surrounded by salt water.

The sweet water lake inside the fort was called as Shahi Talab.

Darbar. The main hall

As told by our guide, the Raj Darbar or assembly hall was originally a five floor structure. Now only three floors have left and the rest have fallen down during passage of time. Some steps needs to be taken to save this structure.



Chor Darwaja or Secret Door - Janjira Fort


When the main gate of the fort was closed. This route was used in emergency as secret gate.  

Cannon Kalal Bangdi. (Firing Range 12 kms)

There are three large cannons on the fort namely Chavdi, Gomukh ( Cow face shape on the front) and Kalal Bangdi. (The cannon was built by assembling the rings shapes ( Bangdi , Marathi word for Bangles also when it fired it sounded like Bangles in lady's hand).

  • Pune - Mulshi - Tamhini Ghat - Kolad - Roha - Murud - Janjira.
  •  Distance : 190 kms from Pune.
  • Time : 4-5 hrs. approx.
